The Winter Classic as a television event was the brainchild of NBC Sports Executive VP Jon Miller. Weather has proven to affect the game, with the 2011 Winter Classic being delayed due to rain. The 2008 Winter Classic was colloquially called the "Ice Bowl" around Buffalo. For 2012, it has been reported that the Philadelphia Flyers will host the Winter Classic versus the New York Rangers on January 2 at Citizens Bank Park.
