The New York Mets began the 1969 season with a mediocre start, going 21-23 through the end of May, but won 38 of their last 49 games and finishing in first place with a 100-62 record for the season, their first winning year ever. The New York Mets began their on-field play in 1962, losing their first nine games en route to a 40-120 record. The New York Mets were given very little chance in the 1969 World Series, facing a powerful Baltimore Orioles team that had gone 109-53. Tom Seaver was roughed up in the opener, which he lost, but the New York Mets rallied superbly to take the next four games, winning the World Series of 1969 4 games to 1.
