Stephen Sondheim composed the Broadway musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with book by Hugh Wheeler, based on the Bond play. Sondheim called Sweeney Todd a "musical thriller" and, due to its sparse non-sung dialogue, "virtually an opera." A smaller-scale 1989 revival of Sweeney Todd at Circle in the Square starred Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler under the direction of Susan Schulman. In 1982 a full-scale production of Sweeney Todd featuring the national touring cast aired and won three Emmys. The concert version of Sweeney Todd featured a full symphonic orchestra and chorus, and utilized minimal props and staging. The production of Sweeney Todd transferred to Broadway in 2005, with a cast headed by Tony Award winners Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris.
