On September 16, 2006, REM performed, including Bill Berry, for their induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.  REM is an alternative rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in early 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and vocalist Michael Stipe.  This marked the first time Berry has worked with REM since his departure almost a decade ago.  Throughout the 1980s, REM worked relentlessly, releasing records every year from their debut EP in 1982, Chronic Town, through Green in 1988. REM's politics, aesthetics, and hardworking ethos allowed the band to establish itself as a key element of the burgeoning alternative rock scene of the 1980s.
