After the 1992 season, having again identified the quarterback position as a position of need, longtime Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason joined the New York Jets for the 1993 season.  After the 1996 season, the New York Jets would go on to enjoy a sort of resurgence in relatively short order.  Because the New York Jets play in a venue named for another NFL team that plays there, the New York Giants, the New York Jets officially refer to the site as simply The Meadowlands; it is used on all official NFL and team game notes regarding New York Jets' home games.  In 1965, the New York Jets signed University of Alabama quarterback Joe Namath, who chose to sign with the New York Jets over the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that held his NFL rights.  In 1968, the New York Jets would reach the pinnacle of their existence and provide the moment that would indicate the AFL's coming of age.  In the New York Jets first season after the merger, Joe Namath broke his wrist in October and was unable to play for the rest of the season, with the New York Jets finishing 4-10.  Looking to build on his 1997 success, Bill Parcells signed Patriots running back Curtis Martin and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Vinny Testaverde as free agents in time for the 1998 season, which turned out to be the most successful for the New York Jets since the 1960s.  On January 8, 2006, Herm Edwards ended his time as head coach of the New York Jets and he signed a 4-year, $12,000,000 contract to become the new head of the Kansas City Chiefs.  The New York Jets are a professional American football team based in the New York City metropolitan area.  The New York Jets began as the New York Titans, a charter member of the American Football League in 1960.  The New York Jets did not live up to expectations after the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.  The New York Jets hold the distinction of being the first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.  The New York Jets looked to improve on that mark for the 1986 season, with the team winning 9 straight games to start the season at 10-1.  Under Namath's guidance, the New York Jets rose to the top of the AFL and in 1969 represented that league in Super Bowl III.
