The New York Jets hold the distinction of being the first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The New York Jets looked to improve on that mark for the 1986 season, with the team winning 9 straight games to start the season at 10–1. Under Namath's guidance, the New York Jets rose to the top of the AFL and in 1969 represented that league in Super Bowl III.
